Is marijuana good or bad? Many myths float around about this drug, and not all of them are true.

America has struggled for decades over the legalization of marijuana. On one hand there is the gateway drug argument, the addiction factor, the brain impairment and numerous long-term effects, but on the other hand there are the medicinal benefits, the calming effects, and the possible prescription as an antidepressant. What's true and what's not? Research has the final say.

The Addictiveness of Marijuana

Is marijuana addictive? Yes. Then again, so are caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol.

Marijuana vs. Alcohol

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 23,199 U.S. citizens died from alcohol related reasons in 2007, excluding accidents and homicides. 14,406 more died from alcoholic liver disease. To this day there has yet to be recorded one credible case of death due to marijuana, and tests on lab rats show that the amount of chemicals necessary for overdose versus the amount necessary for intoxication is something like 40000:1. For reference purposes, the ratio is 4:1 – 10:1 for alcohol.

Alcohol has been proven to induce violence and aggression, where marijuana tends to relax. While marijuana does cause short term memory loss during intoxication, there are no proven long term effects to date.

Marijuana vs. Nicotine & Tobacco

Research shows that nicotine, the primary drug in tobacco, is far more addicting than marijuana. Long-term smokers have a much harder time and suffer more severe withdrawal symptoms when trying to break free of nicotine addiction. By contrast, marijuana is surprisingly gentle.

Marijuana smokers run the risk of lung cancer, much like tobacco smokers. This is because tar in the smoke coats the lungs, not because of the drugs themselves. Some researches suggest that marijuana smoke is more likely to cause cancer than cigarette smoke, but those researches do not take into account the relative quantities actually smoked, so nothing has been set in stone.

Marijuana vs. Caffeine

In a study where three different doctors rated the addictiveness of 6 different drugs, with 1 being most addictive and 6 being least addictive, marijuana came out on the bottom every time. Caffeine was always 5th (in one case tied with marijuana), with alcohol and nicotine ranging anywhere from 1st to 4th. On a closer breakdown, caffeine was revealed to have slightly higher tolerance (amount needed to satisfy cravings) and dependence, while marijuana causes a slightly higher level of intoxication. In conclusion, marijuana is more or less on the same level as coffee, the "drug" hardly anyone considers harmful.

Marijuana as a Gateway Drug

This is the most common theory taught to unsuspecting teenagers all over the country. "Don't touch marijuana, it will lead you into worse drugs!" A 12-year long University of Pittsburgh study showed that this was entirely untrue -- drug usage tended to depend on which drugs were more easy to obtain, and no especial drug popped out as a "gateway."

In fact, when the Dutch partially legalized marijuana in the 70s, usage in heroin and cocaine declined as more people switched over. This supports the easier-to-obtain theory, and also indicates that commercial access of marijuana may actually lessen abuse of other, harsher drugs.

Marijuana and Brain Damage

There have been no proven long-term effects on marijuana on the brain. There are on alcohol, nicotine, and even some tentative studies for caffeine, but examinations on chronic, long-term marijuana users found no damage to their mind.

Marijuana does cause short-term memory loss during usage, and thus chronic users may appear absent-minded all the time, but even in the most severe cases memory loss will cease within a few months of abstinence.

Marijuana also lessens aggression by stimulating alpha waves, which are generally associated with meditative and relaxed states. Chronic users may appear abnormally "chill" and talk in a dreamy, floaty way. This has no correlation with brain damage, however, and marijuana has actually been shown to heighten the imagination and improve creativity.

Marijuana as Medicine

Experiments with marijuana indicate that it reduces pain when taken in small amounts, but may have the opposite effect when too much is taken as once.

Studies showing that marijuana helps with cancer, MS, and glaucoma are all hypothetical and have not been proven for sure. It is true that marijuana relieves pressure on the eyes, which will help glaucoma, but it also lowers blood pressure overall, which may lead to less blood flow to the eye.

Coffee is also liquid carcinogen, this does not correlate that it will definitely cause cancer. You do not require to smoke marijuana when vaporizers exist.

While difficulty with short-term memory during effects and during periods of frequent use can occur ones level of intoxication and mental state (ie. underslept, fed, unfed, set, setting, mood) are co-dependent.

This article was very informative because there are many myths on the streets about the effects of marijuana on a user. As a recovering weed smoker, I now feel more powerful in being able to handle marijuana.

I think that marijuana CAN help, but it still should be taken in moderation. Even though it's true that you cannot O.D. and there is no permanent loss of anything, marijuana can slow your reflexes, and make you lazy. Overall, it's a good thing.

I agree with using Marijuana for medical purposes only. It is very important that they keep it illegal from the rest of regular society. I think it's common sense, you don't need a scientist to tell you somthing is wrong. Anybody that is ignorant and cendones legalization is more than likely an adict themselves, or has over used and abused the substance. I know of a family of eight people steming from family and friends, whom I love dearly and watched them all blunder away succesful careers due to the over use of Marijuana for to many years. Today only one of them is still employed, only because he is one of the youngest at 26 years old and a total pot head, with a succesful career I must add. I hope time doesn't take it's toll on him to,people become stubborn and ignorant, losing all values, with a combination of mental illness Marijuana cannot be good Duh! They range from ages16, 17, 26, 30, 36, 46, 54 and 54 sitting on there tushes collecting welfare and disability because they cannot support themselves anymore. The effects are definately more long term. I like to smoke up too and wish I had never started. Grow up people, we should respect our elders opinions too. They know a little bit more than we give them credit. I bet they outlivved us with just common sense and good old fashioned values and morals. Smoking anything is harmfull especially when young children are exposed to it because we allow it. If the children see it we will eventually teach them it's okay , what's next. Cmmon folks wake up this is a game with peoples lives. I say we shouldnt even take a chance except for critical medical reasons only. Our ministries and social services are flooded with many that have used and abused, not all but some and thats to much for me.It costs tax payers millions to suport these people because they cannot cope mentally with there lives and situations. The mental effects long term cannot be taken back or changed, especailly when innocent children are exposed by some parents. Please consider finding a better thing to do with your life that actually exercises our brains rather than turning it in to mush.

The guest that had a whole lot to say on May 15th 2010. All you're going on is one case of people that you know. But then should alcohol be outlawed? bc that situation is notorious for alcoholics. You're saying for people to grow up, but you seem to be missing any facts.

The problem with weed is that its legal and makes everyone who smokes it look like a crimanal and that gives it a bad name. I tell my friends everything in life is the pursuit of happiness and all you have to do is take a puff, which many people do everyday with ciggerattes, and in an instense you feel calmer, more relaxed and happier. And now as wonderful irony would have it I forgot wat else I was going to say:)

im for this stuff all the way.........WAY better than alcohol.............safer than cigs if not smoken too often.........less addictive than caffeine...........and memory loss is only temporary plus it relieves pain and helps cure cancer.............it should ne illegal not to smoke this stuff :P

To the person who said "I just don't understand how cigarettes, alcohol, caffine, and salvia can be legal, but marijuana--the most relaxing, safest drug--cannot. GO WEED!" I'd like to say Salvia is THE safest drug, even more so then marijuana. But yes, weed should be legalized and Salvia should stay legalized as well.

I believe that lagalizing marijuana would benfit the society aswell as the government. We as tax payers pay around one billion dollars a year to incarcerate marijuana offenders. Not including what is spentjust to bust them. We could use that money for our schools since they already have low fundings and not even the education lottery is helpful as we hoped. Our soldiers are still at war and im sure even theycould use a liitle more funds. Also keep in mind that OUR country, the USA is in debt by trillions. "Think outside the box".

i believe and no that Cannabis should be taken in its natural way. The only big problem is the chemicals and posions added to grow it hydo and thats were it can be no good for your brain cells.
Now think about this legalizing Cannabis would = more natural and cleaner, and less drug dealers who add allsorts of chemicals only to better there $$$$$

This is a VERY good article, many thanks..now people can better understand the differences between the harmful drugs, and the very much less harmful, natural herb, Tetrahydrocannabinol.
Not to mention, God put it on this earth, unlike the chemicals added to tobacco and the man-made alcohol...but still yet it is illegal hmmm. I would have to say that the government is doing something wrong there..
POWER TO THE PEOPLE!
